Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells (Pair) Review
It’s hard to fit the words “best and cheap” adjustable dumbbells all in the same sentence, because in all actuality, they really do not belong together. However, many people find themselves trying to find the cheapest set they can get their hands on – much like when they’re looking for an elliptical machine, spin bike or any other piece of exercise equipment.
The amount of money you’’re willing to spend on something will all depend on the following:
- How many times a week do you plan on using it?
- Are you going to use it every day?
- Do you need more than 10 lbs, 20 lbs, 50 lbs +?
- How are you working out? Crossfit type WODS? Old school lifting? Intense dropping your weights?
All of these questions come into play when you’re choosing any piece of exercise equipment.
While you may already have the Schwinn ellptican, Schwinn Airdyne, Bowflex M7, Bowflex Ultimate 2, Bowflex Selecttech 1090, or something else that you use on a routine basis, if you are serious about your muscle building routine, you will need a nice set of dumbbells.
While there are many different types of dumbbells currently on the market, the one that we believe stands out from the crowd would be the Bowflex Selecttech 552.
For years, we used different sets of dumbbells and yes, we were able to get by with them but what we really wanted was something that would make us push and get stronger and the current sets we had didn’t seem to be enough. Like we said, they were just enough to get by, but that’s it – eventually, we got too used to the weight of them.
Are They Too Big?
When you look at a picture of the Bowflex Selecttech 552, you may feel as if they’re too big and maybe just a little too bulky. It seemed like these dumbbells were too big to the point they would limit some range of motion with various exercises. However, the truth is – they do and they don’t. For example, let’s say you want to do presses, you will be able to get a full extension in there. You can do a dumbbell bench press and have your arms fully extended. However, you won’t be able to get that additional squeeze in there unless you turn your palms inward. This isn’t that big of a deal because you still get that full extended rang. Does that make sense? Now, there may be a couple of moves, depending on the type of set up you have that may have you rubbing against the bench with the weights. But this isn’t really all that big of an issue.
Take a look at these features:
- Easily adjusts in only a matter of seconds
- The revolutionary design makes for one set of dumbbells that replace a total of fifteen sets.
- Purchasing this set will save you money
- The weights range from 5 lbs to 52 lbs
- Adjusts in 2.5 lbs increments
- Consists of durable rubber handles, which reduce slipping and hand injury
- Saves a large amount of space
- Dimensions: 15.75” x 8” x 9”
When it comes to using the Bowflex Selecttech 552, there is no denying the fact that there are many pros.
What Are the Drawbacks of the Set?
As with any set, regardless of what it is, if you really get down there and dig deep, you’re going to find some drawbacks. In this case, with all of the research we did, we managed to find a couple of cons that we felt are worth mentioning. Below, you will find our list:
- This set only goes up to 52.5 lbs. Some people may need more than this, but personally, we feel that is enough for us.
- When you mishandle this set, there’s plastic pieces on it that can break off. However, this doesn’t happen very often, but we did find a couple of people reporting this drawback.
What Makes this Set So Special?
The whole reason a person chooses an adjustable dumbbell is because they will have the ability to choose how much they would like it to weigh. As for the dumbbell itself, it only weighs 5 pounds, but don’t let this fool you. All you have to do is slip it into place and the bar is going to attach the additional weight you require.
Isn’t that pretty cool? We think so too!
You can adjust the dumbbell between 5lbs and all the way up to 52lbs in only a matter of seconds – yes, you can adjust them that quick. This technique replaces 15 sets that aren’t able to be adjusted. In return, not only does this help save money as you no longer have to store 15 sets of dumbbells, but it also helps you save space as you no longer have to store 15 dumbbells.
They’re Easy to Set Up
In the dumbbell set, you will find a DVD set labeled “Secrets of the 4 Step Rep.” This is a guide that you shouldn’t just toss to the side. You can watch it and learn how to get the most benefits out of the dumbbells – in it, it’ll show you certain exercises. In total, it lists around 30 exercises that you can perform with this set and in all, it comes to a little over 80 variations of exercises ….exercises that you will be able to do in the privacy of your own home or office.
With this set, you will be able to do typical leg exercises, like squats or lunges. If you want to work on your back, you can do that as well by doing shoulder presses, dead lifts and much more. Either way, the guide will show you how you can do the exercise the right way.
Is the Set Really Going to Help You Save Money
Take a couple of minutes to do a fast search on Amazon. Look up how much a single set of dumbbells cost – the good ones will count $100 and above and this does not include shipping. Multiply that cost by fifteen and there you are, sitting at $1,500. That right there is the price you would pay for the 15 sets of dumbbells if you were to buy them separately. Bowflext Selecttech 552 makes it so that you only have to buy one dumbbell. The savings along justifies the purchase.
As we mentioned before, this dumbbell set is going to save a large amount of space. Most people prefer using their workout area for working out and don’t like the idea of having it cluttered up with weights. Each dumbbell will come with selection dials that can easily be adjusted whenever you need to. For the first twenty five pounds, you can adjust it in 2.5lb increments, which is perfect for people of all walks of life that prefer using lighter weights.
Each dumbbell will come with durable rubber handles, which reduces the incident of slipping and getting rough spots on the hands. From what we have noticed, the serious issues that happen only happen when the dumbbells aren’t used properly. The dumbbells are durable, but as we mentioned earlier, some are made of plastic, so they may break if they are dropped from up high. However, from the reviews we read, this only happened a couple of time and requires a simple replacement part. All in all, we believe the Bowflex Selecttech 552 set is well worth having around, especially if you would like to up your game.
